Nakuru is the capital of Nakuru County in Kenya. It has 326,125 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest urban center in the country and the largest urban center in the Kenyan mid-west with Eldoret in Uasin Gishu following closely behind. It lies about 1,850 m above sea level. Small scale agriculture, manufacturing and tourism are the backbone of its economy. It is an agriculturally-rich county blessed with various tourist attractions such as craters and lakes. The main source of light is kerosene, sometimes replaced by firewood and candles. For cooking the households almost exclusively use charcoal and firewood (hence a high rate of deforestation in the area). The price of kerosene is high. The lack of access to light is quoted by the parents and teachers as one of the biggest hindrances in student performance and it’s very hard to study at home, so they study only at school during the day.
