Kilifi County is a county of Kenya. It was formed in 2010 as a result of merge of Kilifi District and Malindi District. Its capital is Kilifi and its largest town is Malindi. The county has a population of 1,109,735. Malindi is a town on Malindi Bay at the mouth of the Galana River, lying on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. It is 120 kilometres northeast of Mombasa. Malindi is a tourist favourite location and very beautiful scenic landscapes, shore line, beaches and sea life. They claim that they cannot farm hence rely on fishing and tourism for daily living. The main source of light is kerosene, sometimes replaced by firewood and candles. For cooking the households almost exclusively use charcoal and firewood (hence a high rate of deforestation in the area). The price of kerosene is high.
The lack of access to light is quoted by the parents and teachers as one of the biggest hindrances in student performance and it’s very hard to study at home, so they study only at school during the day.
In April 2019, GIVEWATTS received funding for an additional 100 solar lamps and 100 clean cook stoves to support plans to broaden our impact to more communities in Malindi.
GIVEWATTS brings access to clean energy products as solar lamps. GIVEWATTS process has been developed into a process where the initial funding starts the distribution wheel. Our aim is to keep a balance between business efficiency and impact.
Clean energy solutions have socio-economic and environmental impact. We continuously use studies and research to calculate the impact. Use the button to read more about the impact. If you want to know your impact, please contact GIVEWATTS.
